| Art & Materials’ Clay Studio Policy The clay studio is intended to foster creativity, skill and a sense of community in ceramic artists. We hope you enjoy learning and working here. We offer classes, studio time, one-day workshops and raku outings (scheduled at other kilns out of town). We also have children’s classes and camps and run a Student Pottery Show every year. In addition to selling clay, glazes and tools, we are AMACO distributors and sell Brent Wheels, Slab Rollers, Excel Kilns and accessories. If you need help setting up your own clay studio, just talk with Chris or Shelley and we’ll set you up! Clean UpAll students and studio potters are responsible for cleaning up equipment and tools thoroughly after each session, returning everything to its proper place. Bins for tools are labeled clearly. Bats and tiles are to be rinsed off and returned to the shelf. Bat-tile system bats should be wiped and dried and returned to the wheel head. Do not allow these bats to sit in water. Please empty your slip bucket outside and rinse it. Splash pans are to be washed in the outdoor sink or with the spray hose outside. Please put them back on the wheel properly. Please wipe up the tables that you use. Minimize dust (which is unhealthy) by cleaning up with wet rags. Please clean up trimmings carefully from the floor and surrounding areas and wipe with damp rags. Please leave the cover of the slab roller open to the canvas will dry quickly. Please use a separate shim for red clay. Use a canvas cover over red clay, so the cover will not become contaminated. If you need help or have questions about the slab roller ask Chris or Shelley; we will be happy to show you. Please clean out and wipe up extruder when you are finished. Leave clean dies on the table under extruder. If you have a personal shelf for workspace, please wipe it off regularly and do not allow dust to accumulate there. For the sake of everyone’s health, please cover your pots and trim them while they are leather, not bone dry. There is a broom next to the kickwheel where the giffin-grip is set up. Sweep up trimmings, wipe off the wheel. It is not necessary to remove the giffin grip or disassemble it to clean it. Please refrain from eating or smoking in the studio. Please stay away from the kiln area, as it is very hot and could burn you when it is on. Please keep your personal tools labeled for your own sake- they will be assimilated into the studio tools if they aren’t labeled. Please write your name and clay type on your clay. If it is left out somewhere, we won’t know whose it is and we’ll use it all up! Pot-iquetteAlways put your name on all your pots. Pots without names will be held for only a few weeks. Afterwards they may be boxed up, disposed of or sold on ebay! Please pick up your finished work within two weeks. Even if your wheel is possessed by an evil spirit, we ask that you please refrain from beating, bludgeoning or otherwise abusing the wheel or the foot pedals. They take a lot of time to repair, and it’s easier just to call a priest. |
