I would like to share an experience that has helped me greatly over the last few months. For the last few years I have struggled to find the time to devote to my painting. Running Art&Materials can be an all consuming task. I am settling in now and have gone back to my painting but with much surprise, am not able to handle color and light as well as when I was painting often. If you have experienced a similar issue try this technique. Create a monochromatic painting in Payne’s Gray and white. If you are working from a photo you may want to print a gray scale of the photo to help you choose the value of each area of the painting. Once the painting is well established move away from depending on the photo and look for areas in the painting that may need more or less contrast. If your reference is real then examine it closely and establish your values ahead of time. You can even premix the values if possible to help you paint quickly. Again finish the painting using more or less contrast. This exercise is designed to help you practice establishing a pleasing display of contrast. If you try it in other hues you will find it works best in opaque colors like Burnt Umber. Hope you find this information helpful. | | Our Store's New Hours
